Before you start
- Use an Azure DevOps demonstration project where you can create work items, plans and test cases.
- Check the installation prerequisites. Permission to read a report does not automatically allow you to prepare this dataset.
- Use one configuration for all three cases. Its name depends on your project.
- If you already have a small plan with varied results, you can use it: compare proportions rather than the identifiers in our screenshots.
1. Create the plan and cases
In Test Plans, open the list of all plans, then New Test Plan. Name it TP-DOC — Boutique démo. Keep an area and iteration belonging to your demonstration project. Under the root suite with the same name, create a static child suite named TP-DOC — Parcours de commande. Select that child suite, open Define, then New Test Case. Create these three cases with one step each. Their French titles are kept in both languages so the examples can be compared using the TP-DOC identifiers.
Check: the TP-DOC — Parcours de commande child suite contains three separate cases. Under Execute, that same suite shows three test points if each case has a single configuration.
If you already created the three cases in the root, add those existing cases to the child suite rather than recreating their work items. The child suite’s new points have their own results: set their outcomes in the next step, even if the cases were already executed elsewhere.
For TestPulse 2.73.1, place the cases in this child suite rather than only in the root. With a root-only plan, the report may fall back to existing runs: a not-executed case can then be missing and the execution rate can appear complete. The child suite lets you select and check all three exercise points.
2. Prepare the learning results
Download the demo ZIP kit from the public documentation repository if you have not already done so. On Windows, right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. From the extracted folder, open boutique-demo.html in your browser and click English. The shop works offline, without installation, a server or payment. No personal information is needed.- Click Add to cart: one item and EUR 20 appear. TP-DOC-01 is Passed.
- Leave the address empty, then click Place order: the shop accepts the order. This is the intentional defect in the exercise. TP-DOC-02 is Failed.
- Do not run TP-DOC-03; leave it not executed.
A static suite is enough for these first workshops. With no linked requirement, some coverage measures will be absent or unrepresentative: this is a scope limitation, not evidence of low risk. The NO-GO workshop teaches you to recognise it.
3. Prepare the exploratory session work item
Create a User Story named TP-DOC — Sécuriser la livraison (or the requirement type used by your process). Copy this description:As a buyer, I must provide an address before confirming my order. An empty address must prevent confirmation and produce an explicit message. Fictional scenario used for the TestPulse documentation. The Explore workshop adds notes, evidence and a bug linked to this work item. Keep its identifier; every project assigns its own.
If your result differs
- More than three points: check configurations and duplicate cases. Do not compare counters while the scope differs.
- No creation permission: ask an administrator to prepare the dataset; reading tutorials still work with an existing plan.
- Three unexecuted results in TestPulse: ensure the ADO results were saved, then regenerate the report.
- Two cases and 100% execution despite the third being outstanding: check that all three cases belong to TP-DOC — Parcours de commande, that this child suite is selected in TestPulse and that its own points have the expected outcomes. A root-only plan can produce this incomplete result in 2.73.1.
- No User Story type: use your process’s requirement type and note the terminology difference.
- The shop is no longer in its initial state: click Reset exercise. Azure DevOps results remain saved separately.
